Collection: 4 ply/fingering
4 ply, or fingering weight is such a useful, versatile weight of yarn, equally great for light sweaters, shawls and socks.
Currently I have three fingering weight yarns available; a high twist superwash Merino, a blend of Merino, Bamboo and Silk, and a small amount (on sale) of an untreated NZ Polwarth/Alpaca .
The high twist Merino has a perfect amount of bounce, while still having enough drape for a shawl when knitted on larger needles. I've tested to see if it is robust enough for socks, and it's performed as well as most other sock yarns I've tried. I can also highly recommend it for sweaters, as well as shawls and baby clothes. It is 100% superwash Merino, but I still recommend washing it by gently by hand or the 'delicate' setting of your machine and laying flat to dry, as this is much gentler on the finished item. It comes in 100g/365m skeins.
The Merino/Bamboo/Silk is deliciously soft and drapey, and a delight to work with, and to wear. It has a light sheen from the Bamboo and Silk, and is going to make gorgeously fluid shawls. I've already made myself a summer top from it, and I have plans for more, as well as a cardigan (or several). Although technically it's machine washable (the Merino is superwash), I definitely recommend washing gently by hand (or the 'delicate cycle on your machine) and laying flat to dry. The mix is 54% Merino, 20% Bamboo and 15% Silk and it comes in 100g/400m skeins.
The Polwarth/Alpaca was grown in New Zealand and spun by Wild Earth Yarns, in the South Island. It is light, and delightfully soft, and has a tiny amount of fluff, which makes colourwork easy. I do NOT recommend it for socks, but shawls or scarves and sweaters are a treat to wear. Fair warning - it has pilled for me, although I found the pills have been easy to remove. As it is untreated, I recommend only washing gently by hand, to prevent felting. It is 80% Polwarth and 20% Alpaca and comes in 100g/400m skeins. I only have a few skeins of this left, so they are on sale until they run out.
